1st – 3rd Grade Spelling Bee
Tuesday, January 10th, 2012 at 3:15 p.m. (student check-in begins at 2:55 p.m.) at the Barrington Elementary Gym.
We’ve done our best to remove the frightening and/or awkward aspects of old-fashioned spelling bees. In our format, participants are seated in a semi-circle facing a table of friendly announcers and judges, and facing away from the audience of parents, siblings and friends. Spelling words and example sentences are appropriate for this age group and the list has been scrubbed to remove homonyms. The full list of words given during this bee is made available for practicing. You can view or print the list here.
Students who successfully spell through five rounds are eligible to participate in the 4th and 5th Grade Spelling Bee on Wednesday, January 18th.
4th & 5th Grade Spelling Bee
Wednesday, January 18th, 2012 at 3:15 p.m. (student check-in begins at 2:55 p.m.) at the Barrington Elementary Gym.
While observing all of the official rules and regulations of the Scripps National Spelling Bee, our school employs the student-friendly format of the K-3rd Grade Bee to promote wide participation and eliminate as much intimidation as possible. Participating students are seated in a semi-circle facing away from the audience and toward the friendly panel of announcers and judges.
The word list used at this Bee is appropriately challenging and not available to students to study ahead of time but a comparable list of words used during previous years’ bees is available by clicking on this link.
First and second place winners will receive a trophy and the winner of this bee will be eligible to compete in the Regional Spelling Bee.
If you would like to help plan, or volunteer during, either Spelling Bee kindly send an e-mail to Academic.Enrichment@gmail.com.
Online registration for the 1-3 Grade Spelling Bee is closed. Students may still register the day of the Bee and participate by giving their name to a check-in volunteer before the Bee begins.
